Building Culture From the Inside Out: A Chief Culture Officer’s Perspective

Article by Marci Thompson

Culture isn't just a byproduct of organizational success—it helps drive it. Learn how creating a positive culture can help employees do their best work.

At AlignOrg Solutions, culture isn’t a buzzword—it’s the heartbeat of everything we do. As chief culture officer, wife, mom and someone deeply passionate about health, service and human connection, I see our culture not just in company statements, but in daily decisions and relationships. Our core values aren’t words on a page; they are principles we live by as we help organizations design their future.

Why Culture Matters (And Why I Care)

Culture directly affects performance, trust, collaboration and growth—both inside our homes and in the organizations we serve. People thrive when they feel seen, supported and connected. At AlignOrg, the belief that culture impacts every aspect of an organization—from satisfaction and teamwork to innovation and results—is foundational.

We hold ourselves accountable to values that reflect this belief:

  • We build lasting relationships by delivering exceptional service, earning trust, and consistently exceeding expectations. We provide clients with clear, thoughtful guidance on the implications and consequences of their choices, enabling informed and confident decision-making.
  • We foster a collaborative environment where every voice is heard and valued. We actively invite diverse perspectives and backgrounds to ensure all individuals feel a genuine sense of belonging and are empowered to contribute. Finally, we seek and incorporate collaborative input into decision-making to drive stronger, more inclusive outcomes.
  • We challenge the status quo with bold, innovative thinking and a growth mindset. We embrace calculated risks in pursuit of better solutions, driving meaningful impact through creativity and forward-thinking approaches.
  • We give and receive feedback with authenticity and support, without being condescending. We prioritize team success over individual recognition, fostering empathy, respect, and open, effective communication.
  • Last, we anticipate needs and respond quickly to challenges, adapting proactively to find solutions. We set clear expectations to empower team members’ success and hold ourselves and others accountable for high performance.

For me, these aren’t just corporate pillars—they’re how we show up for each other and for our clients every day.

Values in Action: AlignOrg’s Culture

Being part of the AlignOrg team has shown me how culture empowers people to do their best work. We listen deeply, speak candidly and trust each other with autonomy—creating space for both growth and accountability. It’s this blend of entrepreneurial spirit and genuine care that makes our culture effective.

We expect transparency and integrity, but we also celebrate curiosity and collaboration. Whether we’re welcoming new team members or partnering with a global client, our culture is rooted in mutual respect and responsiveness.

Culture as a Catalyst for Better Organization Design

At AlignOrg, helping organizations clarify strategy and design structures that work isn’t separate from our culture—culture enables great design. Culture influences how decisions are made, how teams communicate and how people work together toward shared goals. Just as we cultivate empathy and collaboration here, strong culture must be built into every organization we help transform.

For clients navigating complex change, organizational design isn’t only about reporting lines or job descriptions—it’s about designing systems that reflect values, enable trust and empower people. When strategy, structure and culture are aligned, teams can move more confidently and creatively. That harmony is powerful.

What This Means for Our Clients

When we step into an engagement, we bring more than tools and frameworks—we bring a culture that values human connection as much as business results. The same principles that guide our internal environment help our clients navigate strategic trade-offs, align their people and processes and ultimately build organizations that are more resilient, more productive and more human.

I often think about the parallels between family life and organizational life. Both require clear communication, shared values, flexibility and commitment. Structure and strategy matter, but relationships sustain. And just like in any healthy family, the stronger the foundation, the better equipped you are to face change, adapt and thrive. Whether around a dinner table or a conference table, it is the quality of connection, clarity of purpose and the depth of trust that determines whether a group merely survives or truly flourishes.

Conclusion: Culture First

A quote about the importance of building culture: "When strategy, structure and culture are aligned, teams can move more confidently and creatively. That harmony is powerful."

At AlignOrg, culture isn’t a byproduct of success—it’s a driver of it. It shapes how we collaborate with each other, how we innovate with our clients and how we show up in the world. I’m proud to help nurture a culture that reflects our values not just in words, but in meaningful action every day.
