Building & Maintaining Alignment Leader® Competencies:
Tyco was transforming from a disconnected IT function spread out among multiple business units to a centralized, aligned IT function.
With limited coordination in the past, corporate leaders had developed different priorities and approaches. Though there were many capable leaders, there was little experience with successful change leadership. Structure and systems in the past had worked against previous IT change efforts.
Our focus was on developing change leadership competencies that increased support for and clarity around decisions, alongside greater direction and engagement. We developed tools for the company to evaluate individuals and teams, and results revealed that individuals assessed their ability to lead through change far above the team’s ability.
This dynamic was discussed with a focus on how to mitigate the weaknesses of greatest concern: helping individuals and the team as a whole to develop specific plans with clear ownership.
We brought in a business leader to lead all change management and worked side-by-side with them, empowering them to become a resource to other change leaders. This included offering tools, process guidance, and one-on-one coaching to ensure sustainable success.
When Tyco moved forward with our recommended tools, they were met with some challenges that reemphasized the importance of our co-created resources.
When some leaders began backtracking and revisiting decisions, the senior leader, with support from her leadership team, doubled down on their change plan and worked to ensure that previous decisions held firm. After many failed attempts, this organization finally made it stick.
